PERSONAL LEARNING PLAN
Name: Janki Gohil Critical Friend: Poorvi Doshi
My role and my journey as an educator...
I am currently administering project based teaching in the middle school. I guide Mathematics and Science teachers in grades 5-8. My teaching practice revolves around teaching though lectures, using manipulatives, videos, investigations, inquiries, making observations, surveys, data handling and discussions in classrooms for the given concepts. Mindspark is a LMS which provides insights into student misconceptions and gives me an insight/ feedback for remediation of the concepts taught.
My role in school has been evolving and so my time is utilized in planning along with teachers at various grade levels in PBL units, GB unit and TU. This year with the introduction of an additional LMS, Compass Learning Odyssey, I have invested my time in inducting parents, teachers and students to the benefits of Individualized Education Plan for the learners. Classroom walk-through provides me with an insight into what changes I need to bring about while planning sessions with teachers so that teaching learning process inside classrooms become more engaging and meaningful both for the teacher and the taught.
I also spend a lot of time searching meaningful Math tasks which lead to real life applications of the concepts taught in Math. Training sessions conducted by Shekhar sir have helped me prepare my learners both for Formative and Summative Assessments with unique tasks which lead to conceptual understanding of the given concepts.
Last year I was actively involved in planning and executing project Pedal Power with grades 7-8. Students conducted surveys, interviews and tried to gather and tabulate information to appeal to the masses the need of reflecting on the use of bicycles and mass transportation to save the natural resource (fuel). Students conducted a bicycle rally in the city and also reflected on the learning process and prepared a 15-20min documentary showcasing the details covered during the entire project and the recommendations for the audience. Similarly this year too I plan to implement a project which deals with 4C's.
My Relationship with learners in my unit
I hope to be able to connect to students through the project that I plan to implement with them. I aspire to weave Habits of Mind in the project planning and create an environment wherein I challenge my learners to work on their Metacognitive skills, to become more reflective citizens.
While reading the book an ethic of excellence, I quite liked the idea of making several drafts of the task undertaken to reach perfection. I plan to share this as a concept with my team of teachers and insist we use this as a technique to help students master their skills.
What bothers me...
Too many students see themselves as failure incapable of success in one domain or another. Yet experience states that actually failure and confusion facilitate and deepen learning. The same students while playing video game are able to improve their skills by working on their mistakes. I would like to take this task and make it possible through classroom instructions in order to shift mindsets of my learners.
Collaboration with my colleagues...
I am willing to plan a project and implement the process as expected by HTH along with you my critical friend. I will try and implement the processes I learn during my HTH training not only in the project I undertake with my collaborating colleagues but also guide other teachers to encourage the learners to own the responsibility of their learning by designing small projects with them. This will help me align with the goals that the institution has charted out for all- To grow as a family and to stay connected as a joint family.
I would like to focus on the following goals in this year.
1) I would like to focus on creating a culture wherein thinking and learning are both expected and encouraged. An environment wherein all voices are heard and appreciated and cognitive depth is clearly modeled and understood.
2)I would like to encourage high levels of metacognitive responses in activities and project that I undertake with my colleagues or learners.
3)I would also like to measure and assess 4C's effectively as against traditional assessment. This type of comprehensive assessments will help my learners manage their learning.
4) I plan to document my journey through these goals and prepare a digital portfolio to showcase student understanding as an evidence of the progress towards the goals that I plan to focus this year.
As I think about my Leading Schools Project...
I would like to learn through some challenges that I wish to undertake.
1) Even if we build up individual student self-efficacy and belief that effort will lead to improved performance, the climate of the classroom, the school, and peer groups, including social media, still affect how willing a student will be to take risks, to make and learn from mistakes. How will I establish and sustain a growth mindset culture that supports productive failure?
2) And how will I keep failure from turning into the kind of frustration that could stifle effort?
I hope to learn....
1)What does an effective assessment of the 4Cs (creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking) look like and how does this differ from a traditional assessment?
2) What can school leaders do to adapt assessment of the 4Cs in a more traditional school environment?
3) How do comprehensive assessments like these help students manage their own learning?
How might these be framed as essential questions?
1) How will I establish and sustain a growth mindset culture that supports productive failure?
2) How can effective measuring and assessing the 4C's help students manage their own learning?
What do you hope to accomplish?
l I hope to plan at least 2-3 small projects which help me showcase my understanding about how comprehensive assessments can help students manage their learning. I will require help from experts within the SNK HTH team to handhold and help me accomplish my goal. My critical friend will play a major role in shaping the projects that I aspire to undertake.
3. Wicked Awesome Learning Opportunities
1) How can I guide teachers to set small targets to achieve student success?
2)How can I use my academic community to grow as a learner?
3) How can personalized learning program help my learners achieve their targets?
As I take this task to collaborate with my colleagues, I will need to share my fierce wanderings with my colleagues and see how they can help me accomplish my task effectively. I have been able to initiate a project last year with basic understanding of PBL and I wish to consolidate my efforts by working on assessment of 4C's which needed to be fine tuned.
WALOs (Wicked Awesome Learning Opportunities):
1) How can challenge my learners to succeed in face of productive failure? (Students who are capable but have a tendency to give up)
2) Present my work using a protocol for project fine tuning.
Share with a colleague
1) I wish to share my learning with my colleagues and help them grow professionally.
2) Work with a colleague to plan a grade level presentation of learning.
Lead my community
1) Participate in project fine tuning sessions along with my fellow educators
